Hermes Agent Blender: The Official Plugin That Runs Blender For You

Hermes Agent Blender support is now an official plugin from Nous Research. It connects Hermes to the official Blender Lab MCP server, so your agent can read a scene, create and move objects, and work in Blender while you describe what you want. Since version 0.4.0 (24 October 2026) the plugin can even install Blender for you after one yes. This is different from the older community Blender MCP route I covered before: it’s Blender’s own MCP server, packaged and maintained in Hermes Official Plugins. Below are the install steps, what you need, the one warm-up command that saves you a timeout, and the safety rules. My video is right under this intro.

Key takeaways

  • Install: hermes plugins install blender then hermes plugins enable blender.
  • Needs Blender 5.1 or newer; the plugin offers to install it (no admin rights).
  • Uses the official Blender Lab MCP add-on on loopback port 9876.
  • Blender Lab warns its tools run arbitrary Python, so use a disposable scene.

What is the Hermes Agent Blender plugin?

The plugin is a small package: the launch settings for Blender Lab’s official MCP server plus a workflow skill that tells Hermes how to use it. It used to live in its own repo, NousResearch/hermes-plugin-blender, which is now archived; the README says the new folder carries its full history.

Hermes starts the MCP server, the server talks to the Blender add-on over 127.0.0.1:9876, and the add-on does the work inside Blender. No Hermes hooks, desktop JavaScript or self-updater are bundled.

Important: this uses Blender Lab’s source on projects.blender.org, not the unrelated PyPI package that is also called blender-mcp. Don’t swap one for the other.

How to install it

hermes plugins install blender
hermes plugins enable blender

Pick a different profile with hermes -p <profile>. Installing the plugin does not install Blender, change your Blender settings or open a scene. The skill does those things only when a task needs them, and only after you agree.

What you need on the machine running Hermes:

  • Blender 5.1 or newer. If none is found, the skill offers to install the newest official release from download.blender.org into your own folders, checked against blender.org’s sha256 list. Version 0.4.1 also finds Blender installed from the Microsoft Store.
  • The Blender Lab MCP add-on. The skill offers to install the pinned v1.0.3 extension through Blender’s own command line.
  • Git and uv, plus network access for the first setup.

One limit to know: Blender 5.1+ has no build for Intel Macs or Linux on ARM, so the plugin won’t work there.

Run this warm-up command first

The first download and build of the MCP server can take several minutes; it did in Nous’s Windows checks. Warm it up before you ask Hermes to connect, so a normal connection timeout doesn’t interrupt it:

uv tool run --from "git+https://projects.blender.org/lab/blender_mcp.git@2cea8d566dde07fbac28a61d698909d69724e853#subdirectory=mcp" blender-mcp --help

Then restart Hermes. The README’s advice: check for a real get_objects_summary response before treating Blender as ready. Seeing the tool list alone doesn’t prove the scene is connected.

Easier option: ask your agent, “Install the Blender plugin, run its warm-up command, then check that get_objects_summary works.”

How Hermes opens Blender

When a task needs Blender, Hermes opens it with --online-mode. That lets the add-on start its bridge on port 9876 without changing your saved preferences.

If you open Blender yourself, turn on Allow Online Access, or the bridge won’t start and Hermes can’t reach the scene. For the tools that open a saved .blend file in a separate background Blender, you also need a blender command on the PATH; a BLENDER_PATH set in a shell or .env doesn’t reach the server.

Safety rules to follow

Blender Lab is clear that its tools run arbitrary Python inside Blender, with no protection against deleted files or data leaving your machine. The README’s rules:

  • Use it only with workflows you trust.
  • Keep the bridge on loopback (127.0.0.1) only.
  • Experiment in a disposable scene or on a separate machine.
  • Remember it is not a sandbox.

What’s been tested: reading, creating, moving and deleting scene objects passed headless on Windows ARM64 and x64 with Blender 5.2.2 LTS. Screenshots and checking whether Blender is still running are not verified yet.

Blender plugin vs the older Blender MCP route

My older Hermes Blender MCP guide covers wiring a Blender MCP server into Hermes by hand. The official plugin is the easier path now:

  • Two commands instead of editing mcp_servers yourself.
  • It uses Blender’s own MCP server, pinned to a fixed version.
  • The skill offers to install Blender and the add-on for you.
  • It pairs with the official Meshy 3D model plugin, which can hand optimized models to Blender.

My verdict

If you’ve wanted an agent that actually works inside Blender, start here. Install the plugin, run the warm-up command, test get_objects_summary, and keep your experiments in a throwaway scene. That’s the safe way to put Hermes Agent Blender automation to work.

FAQ: hermes agent blender

Can Hermes Agent use Blender?

Yes. The official Blender plugin connects Hermes Agent to the Blender Lab MCP server, so the agent can read a scene and create, move and delete objects in Blender 5.1 or newer.

How do I install the Blender plugin in Hermes?

Run hermes plugins install blender and hermes plugins enable blender. The skill then offers to install Blender 5.1+ and the Blender Lab MCP add-on if they are missing.

Does the plugin install Blender for me?

Since version 0.4.0 the skill can install the newest official Blender release into your own folders after you say yes, checked against blender.org’s sha256 list. Installing the plugin alone does not install Blender.

Why can’t Hermes connect to Blender?

The usual causes are a Blender you opened yourself without Allow Online Access turned on, or a first MCP download that timed out. Run the warm-up command from the README, then restart Hermes.

Is the Hermes Blender plugin safe?

Blender Lab warns that its tools run arbitrary Python in Blender with no protection against file deletion or data leaving the machine. Keep the bridge on loopback and use a disposable scene. It is not a sandbox.

Does it work on an Intel Mac?

No. Blender 5.1 and newer has no build for Intel Macs or Linux on ARM, so the plugin can’t run there.
