Grok Bot Linux support is official: the desktop app runs on Linux x64 and Arm64 as a .deb, an .rpm or an AppImage. And here’s a detail most people miss: the cloud computer your Bots actually work on runs Linux too. Below is how to install it on Ubuntu, Debian or Fedora, how updates work through apt and dnf, how to hold a version, and the few things that behave differently on Linux, all from xAI’s official docs. My video is right under this intro.
Key takeaways
- Runs on Linux x64 and Arm64: .deb, .rpm or AppImage.
- The .deb and .rpm add a signed package repository.
- Update with
aptordnf; AppImage updates itself. - Security keys and some notification routing aren’t on Linux yet.

Which Linux formats Grok Bot supports
The Grok Bot FAQ lists Linux on x64 and Arm64, as a .deb package, an .rpm package or an AppImage. Download it from x.ai/bot, the download page or the Grok Bot page of your Cursor dashboard.
| Format | Best for | How it updates |
|---|---|---|
| .deb | Debian, Ubuntu | Your package manager (apt) |
| .rpm | Fedora and other RPM systems | Your package manager (dnf) |
| AppImage | Any distro, no install | The app updates itself |

Install on Ubuntu or Debian
Install the .deb with your usual tool. The deployment guide says it adds a signed apt repository at /etc/apt/sources.list.d/grok-bot.sources, so new versions arrive with your normal upgrades. To update by hand:
sudo apt update && sudo apt install --only-upgrade grok-botOn Fedora or another RPM system, the .rpm adds a signed repository at /etc/yum.repos.d/grok-bot.repo. Update with:
sudo dnf upgrade --refresh grok-botOn a .deb or .rpm install, Check for Updates in the app only tells you a new version is out; your package manager does the install. Those installs don’t show the Automatic Updates switch either.

Hold a version or ship your own
For managed machines the docs give two ways to control when Linux devices move:
- Hold the package, such as
apt-mark hold grok-bot, and release it when you’re ready. - Turn the repository off:
Enabled: noingrok-bot.sourcesorenabled=0ingrok-bot.repo. The package keeps your choice when it rewrites the file on upgrade. Then ship tested package files yourself.
Either way, don’t fall too far behind. The troubleshooting guide says the app requires an update when your version is more than 14 days old and a newer one is out. A held package still gets the Update required screen, which on Linux shows the exact command to run with a Copy command button.
Fleets can install the packages with Ansible, Puppet or Chef. Linux package URLs include the release’s commitSha, so copy them from the debUrl and rpmUrl fields of the linux-x64 or linux-arm64 release feed.
The Bot’s computer runs Linux too
Your Linux desktop app is a client for chat, review and approvals. The actual work happens on a hosted computer in the cloud, one per member, and the deployment guide says that computer runs Linux and isn’t enrolled in MDM.
That matters in two places:
- Private networks. On Enterprise, Team Setup Scripts can install a networking client (Tailscale is one documented example) as long as it runs on Debian-based Linux and starts from a shell script.
- Company sign-in. The identity and access guide notes Okta FastPass doesn’t run on Linux, so admins add a Linux-scoped rule for the Bot’s computer.
Packages you install on that cloud computer by hand can be removed by a computer update or reset, so ask your Bot to keep important results in the shared workspace.
What’s different on Linux
A few settings behave differently on the Linux desktop app, per xAI’s docs:
- Hardware security keys: supported on macOS and Windows, not yet on Linux (per the approvals and security page).
- Hardware acceleration: off by default on Linux, on by default elsewhere (settings docs).
- Notifications: on Linux they’re suppressed while Grok Bot is focused, and your phone is notified as usual. The desktop-first routing only applies to macOS and Windows.
- Updates: .deb and .rpm through your package manager; AppImage updates itself.
Keyboard shortcuts match Windows: Ctrl+K to search, Ctrl+N for a new Bot, Ctrl+D to dictate, and Ctrl+Alt+B for conversation details.

If the app won’t update or connect
- Fully quit Grok Bot and reopen it. The docs say most setup problems clear this way.
- Run the update command for your distro, then restart the app.
- If the old version keeps coming back, download the latest package and reinstall. Your Bots and chats belong to your account, so they survive a reinstall.
- If the cloud computer won’t connect, wait and Retry, then try Update Bot’s Computer before Recover, and Reset last.
My verdict
Use the .deb or .rpm so updates ride along with your normal upgrades, use the AppImage if you just want to try it, and remember the heavy lifting runs on the Bot’s own Linux machine in the cloud. With the setup above, Grok Bot Linux is as capable as the Mac and Windows apps.
