Hermes Agent SuperGrok: Use Your Grok Subscription With No API Key

Hermes Agent SuperGrok support means you can run Hermes on Grok using the SuperGrok subscription you already pay for, with no xAI API key. You sign in once through your browser, and Hermes keeps you logged in automatically. It also works with an X Premium+ subscription on your X account. According to the official xAI Grok OAuth guide, that one login covers chat plus every direct-to-xAI tool in Hermes: text-to-speech, image generation, video generation, transcription and X Search. What Hermes Agent SuperGrok sign-in is

Normally, to use a model in Hermes you paste an API key and pay per token. For Grok there’s a second option: Hermes’ xai-oauth provider logs in to your xAI account through the browser, using a device code, the same kind of login you use for a smart TV app. You need either:

• an active SuperGrok subscription on your xAI account, or
• an X Premium+ subscription on the X account you sign in with. xAI links it to your xAI session automatically.

The guide’s technical summary: the provider ID is xai-oauth, it talks to https://api.x.ai/v1, it logs in through accounts.x.ai, and the default model is grok-4.6. It reuses Hermes’ Responses API adapter, so reasoning, tool calling, streaming and prompt caching all work.

How to set up Hermes Agent with SuperGrok

The quick start from the guide:

• Run hermes model.
• Choose xAI Grok OAuth (SuperGrok / X Premium+).
• Hermes opens or prints an accounts.x.ai link. Open it, enter the code if asked, and approve.
• Pick a model; grok-4.6 is at the top.
• Run hermes and start chatting.

Prefer to log in without the model picker? Run hermes auth add xai-oauth. Your login is saved in ~/.hermes/auth.json and refreshed in the background, so you stay signed in until you run hermes auth logout xai-oauth or revoke access in your xAI account.

Or just tell your agent: “Switch me to xAI Grok OAuth with my SuperGrok account and set grok-4.6 as my model.”

What one SuperGrok login unlocks in Hermes

The best part: you don’t set up each xAI feature separately. The same login token is reused everywhere. Pick the backends in hermes tools:

X Search is worth a mention. It lets Hermes search public X posts, profiles and threads. It’s read-only (it doesn’t post, like or DM) and off by default; turn it on in hermes tools. The providers page says that with OAuth it “uses your subscription quota instead of API spend”.

Video tools like extend and edit with Grok Imagine also accept SuperGrok OAuth credentials.

Running Hermes on a server or VPS

No browser on the machine? No problem. Because this is a device-code login, there’s no SSH tunnel to set up:

hermes auth add xai-oauth --no-browser

Hermes prints the verification link and code. Open the link on your laptop or phone, approve it, and Hermes on the server picks up the login. The same flow works from Hermes’ web dashboard and desktop app.

Fixing HTTP 403 after logging in

This is the one problem worth knowing about before you start. The guide warns that xAI enforces its own allowlist on the OAuth API, and has been seen rejecting standard SuperGrok subscribers with HTTP 403 even though their subscription is active (tracked in issue #26847).

If the browser login works but chatting returns 403, it’s a tier restriction on xAI’s side, not a stale token, so logging in again won’t help. The fix the docs give: use an XAI_API_KEY instead, set in ~/.hermes/.env, and pick xAI in hermes model.

SuperGrok sign-in vs an xAI API key

The docs note that how much chat usage the subscription covers, beyond X Search, is “not currently documented”, so keep an eye on your xAI account if you run Hermes heavily.

Switching models and handy settings

To change model later, run hermes model again, or set it directly:

hermes config set model.default grok-4.6
hermes config set model.provider xai-oauth

grok-oauth, x-ai-oauth and xai-grok-oauth all work as aliases for the provider name, for example hermes --provider grok-oauth. And when Hermes talks to xAI, it turns on prompt caching automatically, which makes long chats faster.

My verdict

If you already pay for SuperGrok or X Premium+, this is the cheapest way to run Hermes on Grok: one browser login, no API bill, and voice, images, video and X Search included. Try it, and if you hit a 403, switch to an API key in two minutes. That’s all you need to get going with Hermes Agent SuperGrok.
