Grok Bot Connectors: Connect Apps, Add MCP Servers and Fix Sign-In

Grok Bot connectors (the docs call them apps) give your Bots a structured way to work with services like Gmail, Notion, Slack, GitHub and Google Calendar. xAI’s docs say a connector is more reliable than clicking through a website, so use one whenever it exists and save the browser for everything else. You connect an app once and every Bot you run can use it. In the video below I show the massive Grok Bot upgrade. Here’s how to connect apps, add your own MCP servers, what each app can and can’t do, and how to fix a connector that won’t sign in, from xAI’s official docs.

Key takeaways

  • Connect from Connect apps in the sidebar, or just ask: “Add the Linear app.”
  • Connectors are account-wide: every Bot you run can use them.
  • OAuth tokens stay on Cursor’s connector backend, never on the Bot’s computer.
  • Bots can add MCP servers that aren’t in the catalog.

What Grok Bot connectors are

The connect an app guide describes apps as a structured way for a Bot to work with a service, and more reliable than the browser when one exists. Use the browser for services without an app, or for visual workflows an app doesn’t expose.

  • Account-wide. A connected app is available to every Bot you run. A teammate’s shared Bot asks before it uses your accounts.
  • Logins stay off the computer. OAuth tokens are held on Cursor’s connector backend, and the Bot calls tools without receiving them.
  • Same account you sign in with. App connections belong to the account you used to sign in to Grok Bot.

The Email app is the exception: it doesn’t connect an account you already have. It gives your Bots their own address (my Grok Bot email guide covers it).

How to connect an app

  • Open Connect apps from the sidebar, or follow an in-chat Connect card. On the phone, tap your avatar top left and choose Connect apps.
  • Browse or search for the app, then add it.
  • When asked to Authorize or Authenticate, finish the provider login in your browser.
  • Confirm the app appears under Installed.
  • In chat, type @ to attach the app to a task.

Easier option: ask a Bot, for example “Add the Linear app.” It searches the catalog, installs the app and shows a Connect card when you need to sign in. The app’s tools are ready from your next message.

Watch the wording: Added means installed, not signed in. If an app shows Needs auth or Disconnected, open it and choose Authenticate.

What popular connectors can do

An app can only do what your account can already do in that service. It can’t raise your access or change sharing. From the docs:

ConnectorWhat the Bot can doLimits
GmailSearch and read mail, draft and send, apply labelsOne mailbox at a time
Google CalendarRead calendars, create and update events, check free time, reply to invitesCan’t change Meet settings or add a Zoom link
Google SheetsRead and edit cells in sheets your account can editViewer files stay view-only; finding files uses Google Drive
SlackPost as the Slack user you connectedOnly in channels that user can post in
XDMs, bookmarks, home timeline and likes via the X pluginNeeds X API credits on your developer account

Public X search is built in and needs no connector. Notion and some other apps can connect a second account.

Add an MCP server that isn’t in the catalog

A Bot can add an MCP server by URL, or by a command that runs on its computer. A server started by a command is available to your other Bots too. Adding a server on a private network, or one that uses a private certificate authority, asks for your approval first.

When a Bot removes an app for you, everything the app added goes with it and you’re signed out, so reinstalling means signing in again. Apps your team requires can’t be removed. For plugins like Tailscale, see my Grok Bot plugins guide.

Connector fixes in v0.78.1

The 27 October 2026 changelog (0.78.1) cleaned up a lot of connector friction:

  • App cards and connector errors show the connector’s name instead of an internal ID.
  • On Cloudflare, Coinbase, Gusto, YouTube, Railway, Google Ads, Meta Ads and TikTok for Business sign-in pages, the Bot offers that connector.
  • When a connector needs a permission its connection can’t request, the Bot says reconnecting won’t help.
  • Asking what a Bot can connect to leads with up to three apps to connect.
  • Connect apps lists apps you connected through Grok under From Grok.
  • After 10 minutes, a connect card asks Still signing in?

When a connector won’t sign in

The troubleshooting guide gives a fixed order:

  • Open Connect apps and confirm the app is listed as installed.
  • Choose Authenticate (Authorize on the phone) and finish sign-in with the right account within about 10 minutes.
  • If the card is waiting, choose Reopen; if it failed, Retry; if the button says Reconnect, choose it.
  • Still broken? Choose Remove, add the app again and sign in.

Two known issues: Zoom authorization from the desktop app fails with error 4700 and has no workaround yet, and SharePoint needs Delegated permissions instead of Application-level ones. A company Google account may also show “Your admin needs to review Grok” until an admin sets Grok to Trusted.

Connectors on a team

Grok Bot inherits your team’s Cursor connector policy, and there’s no separate Grok Bot connector list (teams guide). A blocked app shows Disabled by team admin. Admins can’t push connectors to members, either as mandatory or default-on.

Blocking an app doesn’t block that service’s website. Closing that path takes Network Controls, which is Enterprise only, and remote MCP servers follow the allowlist only when Apply to MCP servers is on.

My verdict

Connect the five apps your business lives in, attach them with @ when you give a task, and say yes when the Bot offers a connector on a sign-in page. You’ll get faster, more reliable runs than browser clicking, and your logins never touch the Bot’s computer. That’s the real power of Grok Bot connectors.

FAQ: grok bot connectors

What are Grok Bot connectors?

They are apps such as Gmail, Slack, Notion, GitHub and Google Calendar that give a Bot a structured, more reliable way to work with a service than clicking through its website.

How do I add a connector to Grok Bot?

Open Connect apps from the sidebar, add the app and finish the sign-in, or ask a Bot to add it for you, for example Add the Linear app.

Are Grok Bot connectors shared between my Bots?

Yes. A connected app is account-wide, so every Bot you run can use it. A teammate’s shared Bot asks before it uses your accounts.

Can Grok Bot use MCP servers?

Yes. A Bot can add an MCP server that isn’t in the catalog by URL or by a command on its computer. Private-network servers ask for your approval first.

Does Grok Bot see my app passwords?

No. OAuth tokens are held on Cursor’s connector backend, and the Bot invokes tools without receiving them. App logins stay off the Bot’s computer.

Why does my Grok Bot connector say Added but not work?

Added only means installed. Open the app in Connect apps and choose Authenticate if it shows Needs auth or Disconnected, then retry the task.
