How to Learn AI Agents: My 6-Week Roadmap (2026)

Here’s how to learn AI agents the fast way: pick one agent, connect a free model, and build something useful in your first week — then add tools, skills, memory and scheduling one step at a time. That’s exactly how I learned, and how I teach thousands of members. In the video below I show how to build your own AI agent operating system. Here’s my 6-week roadmap.

Key takeaways

  • Learn by building, not by reading about agents.
  • Start with one agent (like Hermes) and a free model.
  • Follow a 6-week roadmap: setup, tools, skills, memory, multi-agent, business workflow.
  • Learn free in AI Money Lab; get live help in the AI Profit Boardroom.

Week 1: get one agent working

Don’t start with theory. Install one agent — I recommend Hermes Agent because it’s free, works with almost any model and runs everywhere — connect a free model, and connect Telegram so you can message it from your phone. Your only goal this week is a working agent you can talk to.

Weeks 2–4: tools, skills and memory

Next, give it real work. Ask it to research a topic and save a report (tools). Turn that into a reusable skill and put it on a schedule, so a brief arrives every morning (skills and cron). Then teach it your rules and style, and watch it remember them (memory). By the end of week four you’ll understand the three ideas that make agents different from chatbots.

Weeks 5–6: multi-agent work and a real workflow

Now go bigger: split a large job across sub-agents, then build one complete workflow for your business — inbox triage, content repurposing or lead research. When a task you used to do every week now happens without you, you’ve genuinely learned AI agents.

Mistakes that slow people down

Trying every new tool instead of mastering one. Starting with a huge project instead of a daily brief. Paying for frontier models before you need them. Following outdated tutorials. And learning alone — most problems take minutes to fix with the right help and hours without it.

How long does it take to learn AI agents?

You can have a useful agent running in a day. In six weeks of an hour or so a day, you can run real business workflows. Mastery takes longer, because the tools keep changing — which is why the habit of learning a little every week matters more than finishing any one course.

Choosing your first agent

Choose one that is free, works with many models and runs where you already are. Hermes Agent ticks all three: it’s open source, supports free and paid models, and you can talk to it in the terminal, a desktop app or Telegram. Other good options are DeepSeek Harness for a free desktop agent or Claude Code if you mostly want to build software. What matters most is picking one and sticking with it for the first month.

Learning with free models

You don’t need to pay to learn. Free models on Nous Portal and local models through Ollama are more than good enough for practice. Save paid frontier models for when you’re building something important and need the best quality.

Learning AI agents for your business

If you’re learning agents to use in a business, point every lesson at a real task. Learning tools? Use them to research your competitors. Learning skills? Turn your weekly report into one. Learning scheduling? Automate your morning inbox review. Tying each step to your own work means you’re saving time from the first week, which makes it far easier to keep going.

By the end of the roadmap you won’t just understand agents — you’ll have several of them working for you.

What to do when you get stuck

Getting stuck is part of learning agents — tools change, installs fail, models time out. First, ask your agent itself: describe the error and let it suggest a fix. Second, check the official docs, which are updated faster than tutorials. Third, ask a community: the free AI Money Lab for quick answers, or a live call in the AI Profit Boardroom for anything complex. Most problems are solved in minutes this way.

Start learning AI agents today

That’s how to learn AI agents: build first, one step a week. Start free in AI Money Lab, and join the AI Profit Boardroom when you want live help and the Agent OS.

Finally, celebrate small wins. The first time an agent sends you a useful brief while you’re still asleep is a genuine milestone, and noticing it keeps you motivated. Write down what each agent saves you each week; seeing those minutes add up into hours is the best reminder of why learning agents is worth the effort, and it tells you which agent to improve next.
