Hermes vs n8n: Open-Source AI Agent or Workflow Builder?

Hermes vs n8n compares two tools you can run on your own server that solve different problems. Hermes Agent from Nous Research is an open-source AI agent with memory, skills, scheduled jobs and chat apps. n8n is a fair-code workflow builder where you draw each step on a visual canvas. Below I compare them from the official docs, checked on 5 November 2026, and show how to make them work together. My video is right under this intro.

Key takeaways

  • Hermes: an MIT-licensed AI agent that plans the steps itself.
  • n8n: a visual canvas with 1500+ integrations; you design every step.
  • Both self-host; n8n uses its fair-code Sustainable Use License.
  • Hermes webhooks can fire an agent run, a cron job, or a direct message with no model call.

The short answer

Use n8n when the steps never change. Use Hermes when the job needs an agent to read, decide and write.

How Hermes works

Hermes runs as an agent with tools, memory and skills. You talk to it in the terminal, the desktop app or chat apps such as Slack, Telegram, Teams and WhatsApp.

Its cron jobs run one-off or recurring tasks you create by asking, attach skills, and deliver results to chat, local files or other platforms. There’s even a no-agent mode that runs a script on a schedule with zero model calls.

How n8n works

The n8n README describes a visual canvas combined with custom code, self-hosted or in the cloud, with 1500+ integrations and 9,000+ workflow templates.

  • Build multi-step AI workflows with logic, tool use and human approvals.
  • Connect OpenAI, Anthropic, Google or open-source models.
  • Add JavaScript, Python or npm packages when you need them.

Every run follows the path you drew, so it behaves the same each time.

Licence: MIT vs fair-code

Hermes is MIT-licensed on GitHub.

n8n is fair-code, distributed under its Sustainable Use License and the n8n Enterprise License. You can use and modify it for your own internal business purposes or for non-commercial or personal use. Check the licence page before offering it to clients as a hosted service.

How to connect Hermes and n8n

The Hermes webhooks adapter accepts POST requests at http://your-server:8644/webhooks/<route-name>, checks an HMAC signature and turns the payload into an agent prompt. Each route can:

  • Start a fresh agent run on the event.
  • Fire an existing cron job with cron_job, using the event as extra context.
  • Skip the model entirely with deliver_only: true and just deliver the message.

So an n8n HTTP Request node can hand a new lead or support ticket to Hermes. In the other direction, n8n’s Webhook node gives Hermes a URL it can call to start a workflow.

Easier option: ask your agent, “Create a webhook route called new-lead that researches the company and posts a summary to Telegram.”

Which one for a small business?

  • n8n: sync form entries to a spreadsheet, send receipts, post alerts. Fixed steps.
  • Hermes: answer email in-thread, research leads, write the weekly report, reply in team chat.
  • Both: n8n moves the data; Hermes does the thinking on it.

My verdict

If you can draw the steps, use n8n. If the job needs judgement, use Hermes. If you have both kinds of work, link them with a Hermes webhook route. That’s my take on Hermes vs n8n.
