Grok Bot skills are how you stop explaining the same task twice. A skill is a reusable set of instructions your Bot follows: the steps, the rules, what to return and what needs your approval. The official docs put it simply: make a task reliable once, save the method as a skill, and only then automate it with a routine. Below is how to save a skill, teach one by doing the task yourself, find skills when a Bot can’t see them, share them with your team, and what makes a skill good. My video is right under this intro.
Key takeaways
- A skill says how to do a task; a routine says when a Bot runs it.
- Save one by asking: “Save the process we just used as a skill called…”
- Teach a task records up to 10 minutes of you doing a browser workflow and drafts a skill.
- Private skills are one library shared by all your Bots; teams can publish them.

What a Grok Bot skill is
Grok Bot uses two building blocks, per the Skills and routines docs:
- A skill is a reusable set of instructions for how to do a task.
- A routine tells one Bot when to run a workflow: on a schedule, or when something happens, such as a Slack message, a GitHub, Linear, Sentry or PagerDuty event, an email or a webhook call.
Skills are available across your Bots, though a Bot may need the right app or login to use one. To use a skill, ask the Bot for it by name, or type @ to pick Bots, groups, routines and apps.
How to save a skill
Do the task once with your Bot until the result is right. Then ask, using the docs’ own example:
Save the process we just used as a skill called "Weekly account health."
Include the source systems, risk definitions, output format, and the rule
that customer contact always requires approval.A useful skill states six things:
- When to use it
- Required inputs and access
- The sequence of work
- How to check the result
- What to return
- What requires approval

Teach a task by demonstration
When Teach a task is available, you can show the Bot a browser workflow instead of describing every step:
- Open a one-to-one Bot conversation and its computer view.
- Choose Teach a task and describe the result you’re about to show.
- Do the workflow once, then stop the recording.
- Review the skill the Bot creates and test it on a safe example before scheduling it.
Teaching records what’s visible on the computer for up to ten minutes. It doesn’t record microphone audio. Don’t show passwords while recording; use the secure handoff for logins. The result is a draft, so add decision rules, failure handling and approval limits that one example can’t show.
Teach-by-demonstration is rolling out gradually. If you don’t see it, ask the Bot to create a skill from written instructions and the task you just finished.
Find skills and fix a missing one
Use Connect apps in the sidebar to discover and install supported apps and packaged skills.
Your private skills are one library shared by all your Bots. If a Bot can’t find one, open Connect apps, select the connected count next to the title, and enable the skill for that Bot under Private skills. The v0.78.1 changelog (27 October 2026) also tidied the Add skills dialog, removing the Back button from its library step.
Share a skill with your team
On a team, you can publish a private skill so teammates can use it. On desktop, open Connect apps, select the connected count, open the skill and choose Publish (pick the team under Publish to if you’re in more than one).
- A skill needs a description before you can publish it, because teammates and their Bots use it to decide when the skill applies.
- After publishing, the menu offers Sync to push later edits, Copy link and Unpublish.
- If publishing is refused, you either need to join a team or your admin has turned off publishing for members.
- Skills that came with the app or a Bot’s template can’t be published.
Team-ready Bots also come with skills built in; see my Grok Bot templates guide.

From skill to routine
Once a skill works on a real one-off task, put it on a schedule. Ask the Bot that should own the job, as in the docs’ example:
Every weekday at 8:00 AM, run the Daily customer-risk skill against the
current account list. Post a linked watch list in this conversation.
Do not contact customers.Moving to Hermes later? Hermes’ new Grok Bot importer brings your skills over as Hermes skills; see how to migrate Grok Bot to Hermes. More on scheduling in my Grok Bot routines guide.
My verdict
Every task you do twice should become a skill. Do it once, check the result, save it with clear rules and approval limits, test it, then schedule it. That’s how Grok Bot skills turn one good task into work that runs itself.

FAQ: grok bot skills
What are Grok Bot skills?
A skill is a reusable set of instructions for how to do a task: steps, decision rules, expected output and what needs approval. A routine decides when a Bot runs it.
How do I create a skill in Grok Bot?
Finish a task with your Bot, then ask it to save the process as a skill with a name, including the sources, output format and approval rules.
What is Teach a task in Grok Bot?
It records up to ten minutes of you doing a browser workflow, without microphone audio, and turns it into a draft skill you review and test. It is rolling out gradually.
Why can’t my Bot find my skill?
Private skills are one library shared by all your Bots. Open Connect apps, select the connected count and enable the skill for that Bot under Private skills.
Can I share Grok Bot skills with my team?
Yes. Open the skill from Connect apps and choose Publish. It needs a description first, and Sync pushes later edits to the team’s copy.
Can I move Grok Bot skills to Hermes?
Yes. Hermes’ Grok Bot importer, added on 2 November 2026, brings skills over as Hermes skills from an export your Bot writes.
