Hermes Herald AI Agent: How Hermes Runs Your Whole Computer in Herald OS

The Hermes Herald AI agent is Hermes Agent running as the interface to Herald OS — a free, open-source operating system where you talk or type to Hermes and it works across your whole computer. In the video below I show it in action. This guide focuses on the agent side: what Hermes can do inside Herald, how it asks permission, and how to command it well.

Key takeaways

  • In Herald OS, Hermes Agent is the interface — it opens apps, organises files and runs routines for you.
  • Every system tool has a permission tier; anything that changes or deletes things asks first.
  • Talk to it with push-to-talk or “hey Hermes”.
  • Not to be confused with Hermes v0.20 “Herald”, the earlier Hermes release.

What the Hermes Herald AI agent is

Herald OS is an independent project by Luke The Dev that puts Hermes Agent at the centre of your computer. You don’t open apps and click through menus — you tell Hermes what you need, and it does the work across the machine.

Quick clarification, because the names overlap: “Herald” was also the codename of the Hermes v0.20 release back in August, which added voice and agent-to-agent features. I covered that in my Hermes Herald release guide. This page is about Hermes as the agent inside Herald OS.

How the Hermes Herald AI agent controls your computer

Herald OS connects to Hermes through a plugin called herald-os-bridge, which gives Hermes a set of system tools. Each tool has a permission tier:

Tool tierWhat happens
ReadRuns directly and is logged
ActRuns directly and is logged
MutateAsks you first
DestructiveAsks you every single time

Every action is written to an audit log, so you can always see what your agent did. The developer has also tightened things so Herald’s system tools only run inside Herald OS sessions — not in your other Hermes sessions like messaging or cron jobs.

Giving the Hermes Herald AI agent missions

Missions are for bigger goals. Type something like “build out a new website for me” and Hermes plans it out step by step, then starts working. There’s also a Studio feature that builds a project from a description with a live preview.

For day-to-day work, the dashboard does the thinking for you: it looks at your recent files, projects, chats and calendar and suggests up to three threads to pick back up. And if an app crashes, Hermes can explain the crash report in plain English.

Talking to Hermes in Herald OS

Voice is one of the most useful parts. Use a push-to-talk key or say “hey Hermes”, and choose between a free voice engine and an opt-in real-time one. It feels like having Jarvis on your computer. There’s a full list of voice commands in Settings, and the latest update lets you find, read, name and file documents by voice — perfect for sorting a folder of badly named PDFs.

Memory, files and spaces

  • Memory — see everything Hermes remembers about you, and manage it.
  • Files — control exactly which files Hermes can access.
  • Spaces — keep Ideas, Work and Personal separate, and add spaces for each client or company.
  • Automations — your scheduled routines, switched on and off in one place, synced with Hermes Desktop.

Careful when you screen-share: my Memory page showed my Telegram details while recording. Check what’s visible before you share your screen.

Setting up the Hermes Herald AI agent safely

  • Start with auto-approve off and “ask before sending messages” on.
  • Limit background agents until you know what’s running.
  • Check the activity history regularly — it’s easy to forget what you set up.
  • Give Hermes access to the folders it needs, not your whole drive.
  • Remember it’s alpha software — keep backups of anything important.

Hermes Herald AI agent vs Hermes Desktop

ScopeRuns your whole computer — apps, files, system settingsAn app for chatting with and configuring Hermes
OrganisationSpaces, missions, a daily dashboardProfiles, chats, plugin catalogue
VoicePush-to-talk, “hey Hermes”, free or real-time engineVia voice plugins
Maturity0.1 alphaStable releases

The big difference is scope. Hermes Desktop is where you talk to your agent; in Herald OS, Hermes is the computer’s front door. You can run both — my automations showed up in each.

Example commands to try

  • “Prep my day” — check my calendar and what’s scheduled, then tell me what needs attention.
  • “Sort my Downloads folder and rename the PDFs properly.”
  • “Set up a daily 6am to-do recap.”
  • “Start a mission: build a landing page for my new offer.”
  • “Explain why that app just crashed.”
  • “Switch to my Work space and open my latest project.”

Start with read-only requests while you learn how it behaves, then move on to ones that change things once you’re comfortable with the approval prompts.

Is the Hermes Herald AI agent worth it?

If you already use Hermes, this is the most natural way I’ve seen to let it run your computer: clean design, sensible permissions and voice built in. The Hermes Herald AI agent setup is free — try it, keep approvals on, and build from there.

One last tip: treat Hermes in Herald OS like a new team member. Give it small, clear jobs first, check its work in the activity history, and widen its permissions only as it earns your trust. That approach has worked for every agent I’ve set up, and it’s the fastest way to get real value without nasty surprises.
