What Is Hermes Voice Activation?

Hermes agent now has voice activation: a lightweight on-device detector watches your microphone for a wake word. When it hears it, Hermes pauses, opens a fresh session, records your command, and answers — then it’s ready for the next one. You could be across the room and just say the word.

The loop is simple: wake word → it listens → it acts and answers → ready again. It’s like having your own agent on command whenever you need it — ask it the time, ask how a build is going, give it a task — without touching the keyboard.

How to Set It Up

1. Update Hermes — run hermes update to pull the new voice engines (this update is brand new).
2. Switch it on — type /wakeon in a Hermes session. That edits your config with the wake word enabled.
3. Check it — /wakestatus shows the phrase it’s listening for.
4. Switch it off anytime with /wakeoff — it’s off by default, so it only listens when you want.
5. Or use a toggle — in my Agent OS it’s a single on/off button, no terminal needed.

The Three Voice Engines

Under the hood, the update works with three engines: OpenWakeWord, Sherpa and Porcupine. You don’t need to understand the internals — the point is the wake-word detection runs locally on your device, watching only for the phrase, and everything works out of the box once you’ve updated.

You don’t have to say “Hey, Hermes”. Change the phrase in settings to whatever you like — “computer”, “wake up Neo”, anything.
