Hermes vs Gemini Spark starts with a name change: Google has renamed Gemini Spark to Task. Its help page says existing tasks and schedules are still there, under the Chat and Task toggle. So here I compare open-source Hermes Agent with Tasks in Gemini, using only the official docs and the Hermes v0.23.0 release from 5 November 2026. My video is right under this intro.
Key takeaways
- Gemini Spark is now Tasks in Gemini, a personal agent inside the Gemini app.
- Hermes is open source and runs on your own computer or server.
- Hermes works in Telegram, Slack, email and more; Gemini tasks live in the Gemini app.
- Tasks in Gemini need a personal Google Account and aren’t offered in the UK or EEA yet.

What happened to Gemini Spark
Google launched Gemini Spark in May 2026 as a 24/7 personal AI agent in beta. The current Gemini help page says Google renamed it Task because people kept asking Gemini to finish “tasks”. Your existing tasks and schedules stay in the sidebar.

Control: your setup vs Google’s
Hermes runs where you install it and you choose the model. In v0.23.0, one gateway on each machine owns every conversation, so every surface shares one chat history. The new Webapp opens the whole Desktop workspace in a browser tab from your own gateway; it’s off by default.
Tasks in Gemini run inside Google’s app and use your Google data: Connected Apps, skills, chats, signed-in websites and Personal Intelligence.
Apps and channels
Hermes reaches people where they already are through messaging gateways for Telegram, Slack, Teams, WhatsApp, Signal, email and more. Its plugin catalog grew to over 1,050 entries in v0.23.0.
Tasks in Gemini act in Google Workspace: checking your calendar, RSVPing, scheduling events, and searching and summarising Gmail. They can also make PDFs, documents, spreadsheets and presentations.
Schedules and automation
Hermes cron jobs run one-off or recurring jobs in plain language, attach skills, deliver to chat or files, and can fire from a webhook. In v0.23.0, scheduled jobs can also post into Group Chats.
Tasks in Gemini can run around a time or after an event. Google warns that a schedule running while you’re offline may complete an action you didn’t intend, so keep sensitive actions supervised.

Who can use each one
- Tasks in Gemini: a personal Google Account, Google AI Pro or Ultra, Keep Activity and Personal Intelligence on, and not yet in the EEA, Nigeria, Switzerland or the UK.
- Hermes: anyone who can install it on a Mac, Windows or Linux machine, a server or Docker, with a model provider of their choice.
My verdict
If your life runs on Gmail and Google Calendar and you want help with personal errands, Tasks in Gemini is the easy choice. If you want an agent for your business that runs on your own setup, talks in your team’s chat apps and runs scheduled jobs, Hermes is the better pick. That’s my answer to Hermes vs Gemini Spark.
